Based in kitsch and melodrama, Thomas Allen’s dioramas speak of the force of literature — even that contained in dime-store, pulp fiction novels. Allen’s childhood love of pop-up books served as the impetus for his cut-out creations. Keenly using space and perspective while posing his figures, Allen weaves seductive and open-ended narratives. The resulting photographs are highly detailed, vividly colored explorations of the power books have on the imagination.
