Crow Warriors

Wouter Deruytter has made annual treks to rural Montana to chronicle the Crow Warriors’ annual reenactment of the Battle of Little Bighorn. Rather than capturing the heroic Native American in full battle dress and action, Deruytter creates modern black and white portraits of these men and the details in their environs. The resulting photographs are large, stark and incredibly contemporary in feeling. The juxtaposition of the oft-photographed Native American with the humanity and intensity imbued in Deruytter’s portraits is as bold as it is intriguing. The Crow Warrior’s masculinity and heroism is transcended and a far more compelling story is told.
